This is necessary to fully support utf-8. (We had to make a lot of manual changes up until now, and it's better to do it this way).
Apparently, there already is a function that does this in www/utilities.php. It's called xmlesc() and it was written by Leo (I think) some time ago. There can be only one! :P Make your pick. Cristian
